Frequently-Asked Questions
People have been sending me lots of email recently asking me questions about BC-STV. Here are some of the more common ones.
- Can I just mark an "X" like I used to?
- Yes. A single "X" next to a candidate's name lists them as your first and only choice.
- My BC-STV district elects three seats. Can I have more than one first choice?
- No. If you mark more than one candidate your choices must be numbered 1, 2, 3, and so on.
- Do I have to number all of the candidates?
- No. You can number as many or as few as you like. I suspect many people will just number all the candidates from their favorite party and leave the rest blank.
- What happens if I only list one or two candidates?
- When the last candidate that you numbered has been elected or dropped from the race, the "unused portion" of your ballot is set aside and not given to any ohter candidate.
- How do I say how much of my vote goes to my second choice?
- You don't. You list youre preferences in order, and your first choice takes as much of your vote as they need to get elected. Whatever is left over goes to your second, third, or fourth choices.
