Remapping 2005 to 2009

In 2005 British Columbia was divided into 79 electoral districts. The Electoral Boundaries Commission was instructed to redraw the district boundaries to account for changes in population, and it has proposed 81 electoral districts for 2009. In order to re-run the 2005 election under BC-STV I had to remap the polling data from 2005 to the proposed 2009 boundaries.

Remapping 2005 Districts to 2009 Boundaries

Combining 2009 SMP Districts into BC-STV Districts

Fortunately, the Elections BC website provides detailed data for each polling station in the province and the Electoral Boundaries Commision provides maps showing the proposed electoral boundaries, so it was a straightforward (if tedious) task to look at the maps and reassign each polling station to a 2009 SMP district. Once I had mapped the polling data into the 2009 SMP districts, it was a simple matter to combine them into BC-STV districts using the SMP to STV table.

The following PDF files display the voting areas for 2005 with the 2009 SMP district boundaries added. If you are really curious, you can download the 2005 polling data and my resulting 2009 simulation data. I ran the elections using a custom software that I wrote to carry out the BC-STV counting algorithm.

Note that the electoral boundaries shown on this site do not quite match the currently-proposed electoral boundaries for the 2009 election. The boundaries were redrawn after I finished making the maps and tables, and I have not had an opportunity to update my graphics. The basic principles of BC-STV outlined on the site remain unchanged.
