Larger Electoral Districts?

The Electoral Boundaries Commission has created two sets of electoral districts for the 2009 election: one for the current SMP electoral system, and a different set of districts for BC-STV. The BC-STV districts are formed by combining neighbouring SMP districts.

There are 85 SMP districts, which combine to form 20 BC-STV districts. All together, the 20 BC-STV districts will elect candidates to fill 85 seats in government.

Lightly-populated areas (such as northern British Columbia) have large SMP electoral districts, so only two or three will be combined into an STV district. Densely-populated areas (such as the lower mainland) have very small SMP electoral districts, so four or more will be combined. The ratio of voters to elected officials remains approximately the same in all districts.

Note: the district boundaries were adjusted after I completed this website, and the number of seats changed from 81 to 85. I have not had time to re-construct the following table — please see the BC-EBC website for the most current boundaries.
